Silvio Baldini on Italy’s Future: “It Doesn’t Matter to Me”

Sport news

Interim coach Silvio Baldini has stated that he is not focused on securing the permanent head coach position for the Italian national team, emphasizing his primary goal was to be of service. Baldini led Italy to two consecutive 1-0 victories against Luxembourg and Greece during his temporary tenure.

The decisive goals in both matches were scored by Inter’s Francesco Pio Esposito. The squad notably featured only one established player, Gianluigi Donnarumma, with 19 out of 24 players making their debut.

“I wasn’t offering empty praise; I recognize the capabilities of these players,” Baldini remarked after the victory against Greece. “When young athletes grasp that structure and discipline are assets rather than restrictions, they mature to the level required to form a formidable team. Their development must continue. I had hoped for a bit of fortune tonight, as luck plays a role in all facets of life. My aim was for them to gain confidence from this experience. Adhering to rules and maintaining a proper lifestyle is not a form of punishment.”

When a reporter suggested that many fans and experts would prefer Baldini to continue leading the senior team instead of returning to the U21s, he responded, “Thank you, but my focus is on performing my role effectively. Unfortunately, in football, people are quick to stereotype others. I believe the best testament to that is what these young men have demonstrated on the field. I haven’t appeared out of nowhere; fate brought me here, but the path has been challenging.”

Pressed further on whether he would be open to coaching Italy from September, Baldini reiterated, “It doesn’t matter to me. My sole intention was to be useful. I am part of the Italy family. I managed these matches because I wanted my players to receive recognition for their achievements under my guidance.”

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is scheduled to elect a new president on June 22, 2026, after which a decision regarding the new national team coach will be made.

Baldini also commented on Italy’s U17 European Championship victory, secured through a penalty shootout against Belgium. “Our football family, Italy, is founded on specific principles, and all our youth teams have consistently delivered strong performances and clinched titles. The perennial challenge has been the transition from the Under-21 level to the senior national team. I believe this gap has narrowed following these recent displays.”
