Serie A | Fiorentina 1-0 Lazio: Gosens might guarantee Viola safety

Sport news

A header from Robin Gosens secured a crucial victory for Fiorentina, propelling them eight points clear of the relegation zone. However, the match was marred by controversy, with Lazio expressing strong displeasure over a refereeing decision.

Fiorentina had a significant opportunity to extend their lead away from the danger zone. This came after a demanding Conference League quarter-final where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, with the second leg looming. The team was also hampered by suspensions for Albert Gudmundsson and Nicolò Fagioli, and injuries to Moise Kean, Fabiano Parisi, Marco Brescianini, Niccolò Fortini, Luca Lezzerini, and Tariq Lamptey.

Lazio, on the other hand, had won three of their last four matches, despite a considerable injury list that included Adam Marusic, Daniel Maldini, Ivan Provedel, Mario Gila, Samuel Gigot, and Nicolò Rovella. However, Mattia Zaccagni and Patric were immediately reinstated into the starting lineup.

Early in the game, Mattia Zaccagni came close to scoring in the third minute after being set up by a precise pass from Boulaye Dia. His angled shot was narrowly tipped wide by David De Gea.

Matteo Cancellieri also tested De Gea from a tight angle, while Roberto Piccoli fired just over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area following a well-executed counter-attack.

Fiorentina broke the deadlock when Jack Harrison delivered a cross from the right flank, finding Robin Gosens at the back post. Gosens outjumped Manuel Lazzari and directed a header into the ground from seven yards out, beating the goalkeeper.

Cancellieri made a crucial tackle to stop Cher Ndour on a counter-attack, and Zaccagni’s snapshot was straight at De Gea.

After the interval, Tijjani Noslin’s shot went over, and Harrison had two attempts blocked at the near post, with the second being parried by Edoardo Motta.

A contentious moment occurred in the 64th minute when Tijjani Noslin went down in the box after a challenge by Rolando Mandragora. Referee Michael Fabbri booked the Lazio player for simulation. Despite a VAR review showing contact, the referee upheld his decision, deeming the contact insufficient for a penalty.

Fiorentina were also frustrated by a free-kick awarded for Gosens’ challenge on Gustav Isaksen, which Nuno Tavares then blazed over the bar.

Noslin missed the target with a header from close range following an Isaksen cross, and De Gea was forced into a significant save to deny Petar Ratkov’s header shortly after his introduction.

Giovanni Fabbian headed Dodô’s cross over, and Ndour’s shot from the edge of the area went just wide in stoppage time. The final action of the match saw an acrobatic volley from Pedro saved by De Gea.
