A significant portion of AC Milan fans have initiated a petition advocating for the dismissal of CEO Giorgio Furlani. The core of their discontent lies in what they perceive as a lack of a coherent and effective transfer strategy for the club.
Speculation had suggested that the appointment of a sporting director, such as Igli Tare last summer, would bring much-needed clarity to player recruitment and negotiation processes. However, prevailing reports indicate that all final decisions must still pass through Furlani, a process that is believed to be causing delays and, consequently, fielding a squad that may not align with coach Max Allegri’s tactical preferences.
The fans’ frustration is further amplified by Furlani’s close association with owner Gerry Cardinale. As direct recourse against the ownership is not feasible, attention has been directed towards Furlani as the focal point of their anger.
Initially, online commentary on the club’s official X account saw a surge of calls for Furlani’s termination. This sentiment has now escalated to the formation of a formal petition, which has rapidly garnered thousands of signatures from disgruntled supporters.
Furlani has been a member of the board of directors since 2018 and assumed the role of CEO in November 2022. The team’s recent performance has contributed to the rising discontent; after being contenders for the Scudetto until a month ago, they have since experienced a downturn, accumulating only seven points in their last seven Serie A matches, putting even a top-four Champions League qualification spot in jeopardy.
