Leonardo Bonucci has emphasized the need for the Italian national team to embark on a “new chapter,” regardless of who takes the helm as the new coach. He specifically highlighted Pep Guardiola’s potential to be “very important” for the Azzurri.
Following consecutive failures to qualify for the World Cup, Italy is set to appoint a new coach after June 22nd. This decision will be made following the election of a new FIGC President. In the interim, interim matches in early June against Greece and Luxembourg will be overseen by Italy U21 coach Silvio Baldini.
Bonucci acknowledged reports linking Guardiola, as well as Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri, to the coaching position. “The most important [thing] is that there’s a new chapter for Italian football and players,” Bonucci stated in an interview with Sky Sports UK. “I love him [Guardiola], I think he’s one of the best coaches in the world, so he could be very important for us.”
Earlier, Bonucci had expressed his thoughts on Guardiola’s potential appointment, remarking, “I think it’s very hard, but dreaming doesn’t cost anything.”
