Fabio Capello has issued a severe critique of AC Milan’s performance during their 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari, branding the display as “shocking,” “sad,” and “humiliating.” This loss effectively confirmed the Rossoneri’s inability to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
In his assessment for Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Milan coach did not mince words, drawing a direct parallel between Milan’s capitulation and Juventus’s similar collapse against Fiorentina the previous weekend.
“Both have committed suicide,” Capello stated. “The defining news of the final day is undoubtedly the exclusion of Milan and Juventus from next season’s Champions League. Juventus faltered at home against Fiorentina a week ago, and Milan mirrored them last night.”
Capello reserved his most pointed criticism for the attitude and execution of Massimiliano Allegri’s squad on the night.
“I witnessed a team devoid of strength, lacking will, and without any discernible ideas,” Capello remarked.
“This has been a recurring theme for much of the second half of the season. Against Cagliari, they were fortunate the scoreline was only 2-1. It’s almost unbelievable that Milan players were merely observing their opponents play, especially at this level and in a match that was essentially a final.”
The former manager was equally critical of the team’s physical and mental condition.
“Physically, the team is spent, but they could have at least shown heart and fought,” he asserted. “Instead, there was no pressing, no aggression, absolutely nothing. Ultimately, I can only describe the evening with one adjective: sad.
“I’ll add another: humiliating. It must have been humiliating for the loyal fans who have supported this team with such passion throughout the season to witness such a spectacle. The result and the performance were truly shocking.”
Capello Labels Milan Collapse as ‘Humiliating for Fans’ as Calls Grow for Allegri Exit
Fabio Capello has delivered a harsh assessment of AC Milan’s performance in their crucial 2-1 home loss to Cagliari, which has ended their Champions League aspirations for the upcoming season. The former Milan manager described the team’s display as “shocking,” “sad,” and “humiliating.”
Writing in Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello drew parallels between Milan’s collapse and Juventus’s similar defeat to Fiorentina the previous week, stating, “Both have committed suicide.” He emphasized that the exclusion of both giants from next season’s Champions League is the “defining news of the final day.”
Capello’s critique focused heavily on the attitude and effort of the players. He observed a team “without strength, without will, without ideas,” a trend he believes has plagued them for much of the second half of the season. He expressed disbelief that Milan players were “merely observing their opponents play” in a match of such significance.
The former coach also highlighted the team’s apparent lack of physical and mental fortitude. “Physically the team is extinguished, but they could at least have put in their soul, they could have fought,” he said. “Instead there was no pressing, no aggression, nothing at all.”
Capello concluded by stating that the performance was not only “sad” but also “humiliating for the fans” who had supported the team throughout the season.
