Following earlier reports from Alfredo Pedullà, Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that Gennaro Gattuso has reached an agreement to succeed Maurizio Sarri as the head coach of Lazio.
The transition became increasingly likely after a season marked by persistent tension at the Stadio Olimpico. Maurizio Sarri had openly expressed his frustration regarding the club’s lack of clarity on transfer strategies and the ongoing protests from the ultras.
While Sarri is still under contract, he is expected to terminate his agreement with Lazio by mutual consent this week. This will allow him to pursue a new coaching opportunity with Atalanta.
Gattuso Poised for Lazio Role
After the initial reports surfaced from Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà on May 23rd, Fabrizio Romano has now corroborated that Gattuso has been selected to take over the reins at Lazio.
This would mark Gattuso’s first coaching position since his tenure that saw Italy fail to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, having lost in the play-offs to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Although other candidates, such as Atalanta’s current manager Raffaele Palladino, were considered, it appears Gattuso has emerged as the preferred choice for the role.
Lazio’s failure to secure European qualification for a second consecutive season marks a significant occurrence during the Claudio Lotito era.
