Cesc Fabregas acknowledged that Sassuolo, under Fabio Grosso, delivered an exceptional performance, stating that his Como team was performing at less than 10% of their usual capacity following their 2-1 loss on Friday evening.
The match saw a flurry of goals towards the end of the first half at Mapei Stadium. Cristian Volpato and M’Bala Nzola scored within two minutes of each other, giving the home side a 2-0 lead. Nico Paz managed to pull one back in first-half stoppage time, but this was the extent of Como’s comeback efforts.
This result places Como two points behind Juventus in the Champions League qualification spots, having played an additional game.
Fabregas Reflects on Sassuolo’s Victory
In his post-match comments to DAZN, Fabregas emphasized that he wasn’t seeking excuses. Instead, he congratulated Sassuolo and coach Grosso for their “masterclass” performance. He admitted that his team was “weren’t even at 10%” of their standard level.
“When you lose, you always look for excuses. We apologize to the fans and congratulate Sassuolo, the coach put on a masterclass today,” Fabregas stated. “We weren’t fluid, the ball was too slow and Lauriente was difficult to control. We look forward to the next one.”
Fabregas also noted that Grosso’s tactical approach differed from Sassuolo’s typical style.
“This isn’t the normal Sassuolo, who defend the whole game and then massacre you on the counterattack. There was an incredible density of players. We tried every way to get through but today wasn’t our day. We didn’t have the quality.”
“The second goal was the most disappointing thing. We’re not this sort of team. We have to accept it and continue to prepare better if we want to get to certain levels.”
“Every game is different. We try to be as complete as possible. Today we weren’t even at 10%. Bad for us, but congratulations to Sassuolo. Let’s think about the next game and prepare well.”
