Inter Milan celebrated their domestic Double, having secured both the Serie A and Coppa Italia titles, with a celebratory atmosphere in their match against Verona. The game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, also served as a farewell for several veteran players.
Having clinched the Coppa Italia by defeating Lazio 2-0 earlier in the week, Inter were presented with the Serie A trophy after the final whistle. The team then embarked on an open-top bus parade through Milan. Hakan Calhanoglu was sidelined due to injury, while the relegated Hellas Verona squad was missing Gift Orban, Daniel Mosquera, Suat Serdar, and Daniel Oyegoke.
A pre-match tribute was held for Inter legend Evaristo Beccalossi, who passed away earlier in the month.
Despite a lively atmosphere, chances were created at both ends. Yann Sommer was called into action to make a difficult save from a deflected Kieron Bowie effort. Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s shot went wide, and Lautaro Martinez’s attempt, after being played through by Mkhitaryan, was deflected over the bar by Nicolas Valentini. Mkhitaryan himself missed a golden opportunity when sent through by Andy Diouf, firing directly at goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipò.
In the second half, after a scramble that saw Andrias Edmundsson clear a Mkhitaryan header for a corner, Inter finally took the lead. Although Ange-Yoan Bonny’s header from the resulting corner didn’t score directly, the ball deflected off Edmundsson’s chest and into the net for an own goal, giving Inter the advantage.
Lautaro Martinez had a chance to extend his goal tally but his angled shot was denied by Montipò’s outstretched boot. Edmundsson then made a crucial defensive intervention, first blocking a counter-attack from Mkhitaryan and then, with his goalkeeper’s help, clearing a follow-up shot from Martinez off the line. Appeals for a handball against Edmundsson were dismissed as his arm was close to his body. Verona also had a penalty appeal turned down for a push on Valentini.
The match was also marked by emotional farewells, with a standing ovation for Matteo Darmian, who is set to depart after nine years with the club. Raffaele Di Gennaro, Stefan de Vrij, Francesco Acerbi, and Davide Frattesi are also expected to leave Inter.
Sommer made a final save from an Amine Sarr strike before Di Gennaro was brought on for his final appearance. Inter youngster Matteo Mosconi came close to scoring his first Serie A goal with an angled shot. Petar Sucic also thought he had scored from a deflected Federico Dimarco assist, but Valentini made a vital goal-line clearance.
In stoppage time, Verona found an equalizer. Kieron Bowie timed his run to perfection, outpaced Carlos Augusto, and calmly slotted the ball into the far bottom corner with his left foot.
