Former UFC heavyweight contender Mark Hunt was apprehended in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday, facing a domestic violence charge. The New Zealand-born mixed martial artist and kickboxer, nicknamed “Super Samoan” and “King of Walk-Offs,” was subsequently released on bail following his arrest on April 15.
Reports indicate that Hunt has been charged with one count of stalking or intimidation with the intent to inflict physical harm. According to MMA Fighting, the former fighter allegedly displayed aggressive behavior towards the complainant and a witness who was assisting him with a task. The report states that Hunt is accused of behaving in an “intimidating and berating manner,” causing the victim “fear and distress,” which prompted the involvement of law enforcement.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Hunt’s legal representative indicated he is likely to enter a guilty plea to the stalking and intimidation charge. The publication also cited police statements to the court alleging that Hunt sent the victim a death threat via text message, stating, “I’m just going to murder you in the end anyway.”
Hunt gained significant recognition for his tenure in the UFC from 2010 to 2018 and his victory in the 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix, establishing himself as a formidable heavyweight striker.
