Rafael Leao has indicated that the arrival of Ruben Amorim as the new coach could influence his decision about leaving Milan. Following a goal for Portugal, Leao commented, “He is a very good coach, I will make a decision after the World Cup.”
The winger’s participation in the World Cup has been limited so far, as he was not in the starting lineup for Portugal’s opening draw against RD Congo, nor for their recent 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan. However, he did manage to score in the latter match, concluding the rout with a powerful strike.
Speaking to DAZN Italia after the game, Leao addressed his current feelings and the apparent strain in his relationship with Milan.
Rafael Leao Open to Staying at Amorim’s Milan
“I have to celebrate this with my family, because it has been a difficult season for me,” Leao stated. “I had injuries and many other things in the mix, including the way Milan’s season went. I have to thank my family, who helped me through it, and this goal is for them.”
He added, “I put in so much work with my personal trainer, my teammates, and I have to thank the coach for having faith in me, because Portugal have so many talented players, so I’m very happy to be here.”
Addressing criticism regarding his defensive contributions, Leao defended his approach: “I have to do this for myself, not for anyone else. I work for myself, my teammates and my coach. I’m happy that I was able to help my team, to have minutes on the pitch, it was important.”
When questioned about his future, particularly after suggesting at the end of the season that his time at Milan might be ending, Leao’s perspective appears to have shifted with the coaching change. Previously, under Max Allegri, Leao had expressed dissatisfaction with being played out of position and with early substitutions.
Now, with the appointment of Portuguese manager Amorim, Leao stated, “At this moment, I need to stay focused on the World Cup. What I do know is that this is a very good coach, he did well in Portugal, it didn’t go the way he wanted at Manchester United, but he remains a great coach.”
He concluded, “I will make a decision after the World Cup.”
