Roma and Lazio unwilling to move derby date for Jannik Sinner

Sport news

Reports indicate that Roma and Lazio have declined the proposal to shift their upcoming Derby della Capitale to a Monday evening to accommodate the Italian Open tennis final, which might feature local favorite Jannik Sinner. The derby is currently scheduled for Sunday, May 17th, at the Stadio Olimpico. The Italian Open, held at the Foro Italico complex adjacent to the Stadio Olimpico, is also set to conclude on the same day.

Local authorities had suggested moving the Roma vs. Lazio match from Sunday, May 17th, to Monday, May 18th, at 18:00 CET. This request stemmed from concerns regarding crowd management, public safety, and resource allocation. Similar logistical challenges arose this year when Lazio played Juventus on the same day as the Italian Open final, and this issue is amplified by the derby nature of the upcoming fixture.

However, both Roma and Lazio have reportedly opposed rescheduling the Derby della Capitale to Monday evening. The proposed time of 18:00 on a weekday is considered impractical for attending fans. Given the intense rivalry and history of crowd disturbances associated with the derby, a late Sunday evening kick-off, several hours after the likely conclusion of the Italian Open, is also improbable.

The final decision on when the match will take place is still pending.
