Lega Serie A President Ezio Simonelli has confirmed the league’s backing for Giovanni Malagò in the upcoming FIGC Presidential election. The process will now move forward with a crucial meeting set for April 20th.
Malagò, the former CONI President, has emerged as the preferred candidate for the majority of Serie A clubs in the election scheduled for June 22nd.
Serie A Endorses Malagò: Next Steps in the Election Process
Simonelli announced at a press conference that 18 Serie A member clubs have officially declared their support for Giovanni Malagò, who has met the necessary eligibility criteria set by the FIGC electoral regulations.
He noted that Lazio and Verona were the two clubs that did not provide support, clarifying that this was due to procedural reasons rather than a lack of confidence in Malagò. Simonelli stated, “At this point, the ball is in Malagò’s court, and once he has completed his assessment, he will formalize his candidacy.”
The Lega Serie A plans to invite Malagò on April 20th to present a program that has already been developed. This program will then be integrated with Malagò’s own ideas. Following this meeting, Malagò is expected to conduct his own evaluations of other stakeholders before finalizing his decision and submitting his official candidacy.
Votes from Serie A clubs represent 18% of the total in the FIGC Presidential election. Therefore, Malagò will require support from other voting components to succeed Gabriele Gravina, who stepped down after Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
