Cristian Chivu's Fiery Half-Time Talk Ignited Inter's Comeback Against Roma

Cristian Chivu hinted at a strong half-time dressing down that propelled Inter's revival from a 2-0 deficit to a 2-2 draw against Roma. "Certain things remain between me and the players."

The Nerazzurri displayed a familiar pattern of inconsistency at the Stadio Olimpico. For the fourth consecutive match across Serie A and the Champions League, they found themselves trailing 2-0, this time due to a Manu Koné brace. However, their ability to fight back meant they lost only one of these games, a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid. In this particular encounter, Lautaro Martinez scored twice to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw in a crucial league fixture.

“I’ll focus on the second half, as I shared my thoughts with the players at half-time, and those discussions stay with us,” Chivu told DAZN Italia. “It’s the absolute truth, it reflects my opinion, and I’m confident they understand that.”

It appears the coach delivered a significant motivational speech in the Stadio Olimpico's dressing room.

“I’ll concentrate on the second half. In terms of attitude, determination, and character, it was exceptional. We faced a strong opponent; we know Roma's caliber, and it was an engaging match. I believe in the second half, we showed more than we have recently this season. We need to build on this. I reiterate, some conversations remain private, but it’s a valuable point earned in a notoriously difficult venue.”

While Inter's resilience is commendable, it's a concern that they require such dramatic comebacks to find their form. The team has also conceded nine goals in their last four competitive outings.

“We must improve our initial approach, our understanding of the opponent’s intensity. I'm not asking us to consistently surpass them in intensity, but at least to match it,” Chivu added. “Our league position at this point last season was actually worse. Let’s not forget we have 13 points after playing direct rivals like Napoli and Roma. There's considerable work ahead, we're aware of that, but I will take the positives from our second-half performance.”

The reigning Italian champions currently sit atop the table with 13 points, level with Roma. However, Como and Lazio could join them by the weekend's conclusion.

“I won’t disclose what was said in the dressing room. Everyone is aware of our shortcomings in the first half. There are always two phases of play, with and without the ball, and we need to improve significantly when we don't have possession.”
