Max Allegri has urged AC Milan to “knuckle down” and secure a Champions League qualification spot, offering reassurance regarding his own future with the club. He stated, “We started a journey together and will continue.”
Following recent disappointing defeats to Napoli and Udinese, Milan shifted from a 4-3-3 formation back to a 3-5-2 for their match against Hellas Verona. Although the performance wasn’t spectacular, Adrien Rabiot’s goal, assisted by Rafael Leao, proved decisive. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan also made crucial saves to preserve the win.
Matteo Gabbia had a goal disallowed for offside, and Alexis Saelemaekers’ shot was cleared off the line by Nicolas Valentini.
Allegri Stresses Focus on Results
“Today’s game was complicated because we were coming off two defeats, and with only six rounds left, fear and pressure can set in regarding reaching our objective,” Allegri commented to DAZN Italia. “Trips to Verona are always difficult, even though this team has only picked up 18 points this season. They possess dangerous rapid counter-attacks. We could have played better, but at this point, we need to focus and secure the points needed for our Champions League goal.”
Rafael Leao was substituted just after the hour mark, appearing visibly irritated, and questioned the decision with assistant coach Aldo Dolcetti. Allegri also showed frustration with Santiago Gimenez in the closing minutes.
“We could have exploited the space better with our forwards, as Verona were somewhat stretched,” Allegri explained. “The most important thing is that everyone contributed defensively and understood the significance of this victory. At this stage of the season, the result takes precedence over the quality of play, which is natural. We need to improve in certain areas, as we conceded a counter-attacking opportunity when Bartesaghi pushed forward and was out of position. This is his first significant Serie A season, so he’s still learning, but we must do better.”
Despite the unconvincing performance, the victory allows Milan to potentially catch Napoli in second place and build a lead over Juventus in fourth, ahead of their upcoming match against Allegri’s former club.
“We haven’t secured a Champions League spot yet, but we are close.”
Regarding Leao, who faced criticism from Milan fans in the previous week, Allegri stated, “Leao had a good game; he provided an assist. However, at that moment, I required a striker with different characteristics and opted for Gimenez. Everyone must feel they have a role to play this season, including those on the bench.”
Concerns were also raised about Youssouf Fofana, who was substituted after indicating leg discomfort, fueling fears of a more serious injury than a cramp.
When directly questioned about his future and potential interest from the FIGC for the Italy national team job, Allegri responded, “There are no calls, and my focus is on Milan. We have started a journey together, and we will continue it together.”
