Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s persistent flaw was starkly highlighted by a significant error that resulted in Arsenal scoring against Manchester City.
While recognized as one of the sport’s elite shot-stoppers, Donnarumma has consistently faced challenges with his ball-playing abilities with his feet. This vulnerability was always a potential concern upon his arrival at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, a team renowned for its build-up play from the back and the goalkeeper’s role as an auxiliary sweeper.
Donnarumma’s Footwork Has Always Been a Concern
Despite recent improvements in this aspect of his game, Donnarumma’s old mistakes resurfaced at a critical moment, immediately after City had taken the lead in a pivotal Premier League clash against Arsenal at the top of the table.
Under pressure from Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, Donnarumma mishit his clearance, striking the ball directly at Havertz. The deflection sent the ball into an unguarded net.
The Italian appeared visibly distressed, with teammates attempting to comfort him. However, this is not the first instance where his struggles with the ball at his feet have led to significant consequences.
