AbbVie Connects Golf Birdies to Brain Health Support Platform
AbbVie and the PGA Tour are inviting golf fans to view birdies as more than just scores. At the Presidents Cup, AbbVie introduced "Birdies for Brain Health," pledging $330,000 to six patient advocacy groups focused on migraine, mental health, and Parkinson's disease.
This initiative marks AbbVie's debut as the Official Pharmaceutical Sponsor of the PGA Tour and the 2026 Presidents Cup. The campaign links the pharmaceutical company's neuroscience research with a wide audience and a charitable focus. Starting in 2027, AbbVie will donate for every birdie recorded at Signature Events and the FedExCup Playoffs.
The initial $330,000 donation reflects AbbVie's estimate that one in three individuals globally is affected by a neurological or psychiatric condition. This amount signifies the reach of these conditions.
The funds will be distributed among the American Migraine Foundation, National Headache Foundation, Mental Health America, National Alliance on Mental Illness, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and the Parkinson’s Foundation. By supporting organizations across various disease and advocacy areas, AbbVie positions "Birdies for Brain Health" as a comprehensive effort.
This partnership aligns with a broader trend in sports sponsorship, where brand visibility now often includes a purpose-driven social responsibility component. "Birdies for Brain Health" provides AbbVie with a recognizable on-course presence that can be activated throughout the year.
Each birdie during Signature or FedExCup postseason tournaments will create an opportunity to connect the competition with donations and share stories about individuals managing brain health conditions, their caregivers, and the research community.
Tracie Haas, AbbVie's Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs, stated that the campaign's focus is on sharing patient, family, and researcher stories. She added that the birdie-based donation model will keep the campaign active throughout the year during the PGA Tour's most prominent events.
For sponsors, this structure offers recurring activation opportunities across broadcasts, social media, and special events. It also allows for measurable impact, with the number of birdies serving as a clear indicator of both performance and potential charitable contribution.
AbbVie chose the PGA Tour due to its professionalism, substantial fan base, and the mental demands of golf, which AbbVie's president of Neuroscience, Jason Smith, considered a fitting parallel to neurological and psychiatric conditions.
The launch location, near AbbVie's headquarters in North Chicago, provided a strong local platform for a partnership aiming for national and international reach. The Presidents Cup offers significant exposure and an engaged audience, ideal for integrating a community impact message with the competition.
AbbVie plans to feature athlete stories, including those of Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion and Presidents Cup captain’s assistant. Woodland, who underwent surgery for a benign brain lesion in 2023, has spoken about his recovery challenges. He commented that his experience highlighted the importance of awareness, support, and community for those facing health issues. Woodland believes "Birdies for Brain Health" offers a meaningful way to leverage golf's platform to support research and patient advocacy, assuring those with brain health conditions and their caregivers that they are not alone.
AbbVie identified Woodland as a natural fit due to his direct experience with a brain health challenge, lending credibility to the initiative.
Joie Chitwood, Presidents Cup Executive Director, noted the tournament's historical charitable contributions, totaling approximately $56 million over 30 years to various locations. He emphasized that the long-term impact on people, like that of "Birdies for Brain Health," holds more lasting value than the immediate outcome of the competition.
What began with a $330,000 donation will soon be measured one birdie at a time.
