MagnaReady: Fashion Designed for Independence
Buttoning a shirt, a simple everyday task for many, can present significant challenges for individuals with conditions affecting hand strength and dexterity, such as Parkinson's disease, arthritis, injuries, or age-related mobility changes. These challenges can lead to frustration, lost time, or reliance on assistance. MagnaReady® emerged to solve this problem, not by compromising on style, but by innovating the functionality of clothing.
The inspiration for MagnaReady stemmed from a personal experience. Don Horton, a former college football coach with an active lifestyle, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Following an away game, he struggled to button his dress shirt in the locker room. A player, quarterback Russell Wilson, offered assistance. This moment highlighted a loss of independence that Don's wife, Maura, believed clothing could help restore.
With a background in children's fashion, Maura Horton set out to create an alternative to traditional buttons. Her objective was to design a sophisticated, professional shirt that individuals with limited finger dexterity could easily put on themselves. The outcome was MagnaReady, a dress shirt featuring discreet magnetic closures hidden behind a classic button-front appearance.
"Visually, the shirt presents as classic menswear. For the wearer, however, the magnets allow for significantly easier fastening compared to standard buttons," explained Maura.
Initially a solution for one person, MagnaReady evolved into a broader mission. Maura realized that many individuals with mobility limitations faced similar difficulties. Consequently, MagnaReady transitioned from being merely a clothing brand to an adaptive apparel business focused on dignity, accessibility, and daily independence. The core principle was to ensure that people shouldn't have to choose between ease of wear and feeling confident in their clothing.
The MagnaReady collection has expanded considerably beyond its initial white and blue dress shirts. The men's line now includes workwear, casual wear, outerwear, sleepwear, and activewear.
Key features of their products include patented magnetic button closures, magnetic zippers, easy-grip pull tabs, flat seams, thoughtfully placed pockets, and specialized rises designed for wheelchair users. The range encompasses dress shirts, denim shirts, flannels, polos, chinos, shorts, jeans, rain jackets, fleece layers, camp shirts, and sleepwear. These design elements are specifically intended to remove the obstacles often presented by conventional clothing for individuals with mobility impairments.
Through YARROW by MagnaReady®, the company has also developed a women's apparel line. This collection features blouses, dresses, tunics, jeans, cardigans, jackets, pants, and sleepwear. Some garments are designed to facilitate easier assisted dressing for caregivers while preserving the wearer's privacy and dignity. The collections offer both seated and standing fits, acknowledging that clothing needs can vary based on an individual's mobility and daily life, whether they use a wheelchair or dress while standing independently.
ULEX by MagnaReady® extends the brand's inclusive philosophy into athleisure and casual performance wear. This line offers pieces suitable for exercise, errands, relaxed workdays, and social activities, integrating adaptive features into categories where comfort and mobility are paramount. Examples include track jackets with magnetic zippers, track pants, windbreakers, polos, wrap cardigans, and easy-wear pants, reflecting the company's commitment to incorporating functional design into modern everyday style.
Currently, MagnaReady operates under David Peyser Sportswear, a company established in 1948 and based in Bay Shore, New York. However, MagnaReady's core identity remains anchored in its original mission: empowering individuals to maintain control over a fundamental daily routine. By combining magnetic technology with familiar apparel styles, the brand proves that adaptive clothing can be both practical and fashionable, fostering empowerment. MagnaReady products are more than just about easier dressing; they are designed to help individuals begin each day with enhanced confidence, autonomy, and comfort.
