Romelu Lukaku has stated his desire to remain with Napoli for the remaining year of his contract, emphasizing that his “love for the club remains intact.” The Belgian international aims to fulfill his contract at the Stadio Maradona, which concludes in the summer of 2027.
Lukaku Reiterates Commitment to Napoli
In a recent interview with RTBF, as reported by TMW, Lukaku addressed his decision to train separately in Belgium during the international break in March, a move that had caused some friction with the club. He explained that he stayed in his native country without the club’s explicit permission to focus on regaining full fitness for the latter part of the season and the World Cup with Belgium.
“I was a bit irritated by the way some Italian media presented the thing,” Lukaku commented. “They were exaggerated. I didn’t come to Belgium on holiday; I wanted to return to being the best version of myself as quickly as possible.”
Although initially sidelined and fined by the club, Lukaku was later permitted to continue his training in Belgium and has since rejoined the team in Naples. “It’s all good now,” he assured. “You understand why I acted that way. My love for the club remains intact. I have one year left in my contract. I’m a Napoli player, I’m not the type of player who asks to leave.”
Lukaku is currently part of the Belgium squad preparing for the 2026 World Cup. “I feel increasingly fit. I’m in better shape than before the 2022 World Cup. At that time, I shouldn’t have gone to Qatar,” he admitted.
The experienced forward’s 2025-26 season was significantly impacted by a serious pre-season muscle injury, which limited him to just 64 minutes of play for Napoli, scoring one goal in seven appearances.
