Recent Italian media reports suggest that Roberto Mancini is still being considered for the vacant Italy national team coaching position. However, Antonio Conte is widely regarded as the frontrunner for the role.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is expected to announce its decision on a new coach following the Presidential election scheduled for June 22, 2026.
Potential Candidates for the Italy Job: From Mancini to Allegri
According to Gazzetta, the ideal “dream” candidate remains Pep Guardiola, who is slated to depart Manchester City after a decade at the helm.
Nonetheless, Antonio Conte, currently with Napoli, is considered the primary choice, as he is also expected to leave his club at the conclusion of the current season.
Both Gazzetta and Corriere dello Sport have included Mancini among the prominent candidates for the Italy coaching role. Corriere dello Sport indicates that the former Azzurri coach would be willing to accept a reduced salary, approximately €2 million per season, to return to the Coverciano training center.
Claudio Ranieri and current Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri have also been mentioned in connection with the Italy job. Allegri’s future at AC Milan is reportedly uncertain due to reported disagreements with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Giorgio Furlani.
Mancini previously led Italy to victory in the 2021 European Championship but failed to secure qualification for the subsequent World Cup. He resigned from his post in August 2023 to take charge of the Saudi Arabia national team, a tenure that lasted just over a year before his departure in October 2024.
Mancini recently secured the Qatari league title with Al Sadd, and he commemorated this latest triumph by referencing his European Championship victory with Italy.
