Former AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo has highlighted the club’s persistent attacking weaknesses as the primary area requiring investment this summer. He insists that the forward line has been a recurring problem for many years, and that it was only Olivier Giroud’s exceptional performances that previously masked these deficiencies.
Speaking to gianlucadimarzio.com via MilanNews.it, Montolivo offered a candid assessment of the club’s recent struggles, while refraining from solely blaming the departing Massimiliano Allegri.
“He is a very high-level coach,” Montolivo stated.
“Milan experienced a clear decline, and the squad will undoubtedly need strengthening for the upcoming year. The attack has been a significant problem for Milan for many seasons. Giroud, during his time here, managed to obscure this issue with his fantastic seasons. However, it is in the attacking department where action is needed.”
Montolivo supports Jashari and Ricci for a second opportunity at Milan after a challenging debut season
The former Italian international, who once captained Milan and described his tenure at the club as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, also conveyed words of encouragement to two of Milan’s younger midfielders who faced consistency challenges this season.
“Don’t give up,” Montolivo advised Ardon Jashari and Samuele Ricci.
“This year was a difficult season for them as well, partly due to limited opportunities and a lack of continuity. Jashari also suffered an immediate injury. I believe both of them deserve a second chance because they are valuable players. They need to be patient and persevere.”
