Napoli has provided an update on the injury sustained by Billy Gilmour, which has led to his withdrawal from the Scotland squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The midfielder picked up the injury during a friendly match against Curaçao, which Napoli won 4-1. Initially, the injury did not appear to be severe, and there was hope he had been substituted as a precautionary measure before halftime. However, subsequent scans at a local hospital revealed the extent of the damage.
Gilmour Ruled Out of World Cup
The Scottish national team announced that a knee injury would prevent Gilmour from participating in the World Cup, which is set to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Napoli confirmed on their official website that the diagnosis is a Grade II sprain of the right knee. Initial reports suggest that Gilmour will require one to two months of rehabilitation, potentially making him available for the start of pre-season training.
This latest setback is a significant blow for Gilmour, who had already missed a considerable portion of the current season due to a groin injury requiring surgery in November 2025. He was sidelined until February 2026 but had been working to regain match fitness in time for the World Cup before this new injury occurred.
