Assane Diao: 'A Childhood Dream Realized' Scoring on Champions League Debut for Como
Assane Diao expressed his elation, stating that the moment of scoring on his Champions League debut for Como against RB Leipzig was a 'childhood dream realized.' He described the experience as surreal, fulfilling a lifelong aspiration.
Como enjoyed a perfect start to their inaugural Champions League campaign, securing a dominant 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig. The goals were contributed by Martin Baturina, Tasos Douvikas, Diao himself, and Maxi Perrone. The team's exceptional performance was only slightly marred by a single strike from RB Leipzig's Andrija Maksimovic, which resulted from a defensive miscue.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Diao shared his joy: "A win in the first Champions League game, we couldn't have asked for more. We are all happy with the result, but also with the performance and the happiness of our fans."
Despite this being a debut on the Champions League stage for many of the Como players, they displayed remarkable composure and played with their characteristic style, unfazed by the magnitude of the occasion.
"It's the dream of all children; I've watched Champions League games my whole life. After the win against Genoa, I was thinking about hearing the theme music, and it was wonderful when it happened today," Diao added. "We must all dream; that's the greatest thing in life. I dreamed of this moment, and it came true."
The goal was a particularly special achievement for Diao, as he had only recently celebrated his 21st birthday on the Monday preceding the match. He joined Como in 2025 but faced significant setbacks due to a foot fracture and a subsequent thigh strain, which limited his playing time. Scoring in such a prestigious competition marks a significant milestone in his comeback.
Como emerged as the sole Italian club to secure a victory on Matchday 1 of the Champions League. This success came amidst defeats for Inter Milan and Napoli, and a 1-1 draw for AS Roma in their away fixture against Fenerbahce.
