Conte: 'Fine line between success and failure, but Napoli's Scudetto dream persists'

Antonio Conte and Napoli are left with regrets following their 1-1 draw against Parma. The coach emphasized the delicate balance between success and failure, asserting that Napoli's pursuit of the Scudetto is far from over.

The Partenopei saw the match against Parma as a crucial opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Inter, who faced a challenging fixture against Como. However, Parma proved to be a formidable opponent once again, marking the third consecutive Serie A draw between these two teams.

Gabriel Strefezza put Parma ahead with a goal just 33 seconds into the match. Despite Napoli's sustained attacking pressure throughout, they rarely tested Parma's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, with Scott McTominay's equalizer being their most significant threat.

Conte Expresses Frustration Over Avoidable Parma Goal

Reflecting on the opening goal, Conte told DAZN Italia, "It is so obvious that there’s no need to comment." He pointed to a defensive lapse where both Alessandro Buongiorno and Juan Jesus went for the same long ball, leading to the early setback. "We practice these situations over and over again in training. Match situations can be more emotional, leading to wrong choices, but we have worked on this. It’s a pity, because we knew Parma would defend very deep in their final third. We observed they deployed Delprato as a wingback, which is unusual as he's typically a defender, effectively creating a five-man defense."

Napoli dominated possession with 74.5% and delivered 37 crosses, yet struggled to create clear-cut chances against Suzuki.

"I told the lads at the end of the match that there are incredibly fine margins separating winning teams from those that don't. We should have been more focused; instead, we conceded that goal after just 33 seconds," Conte stated. "The game was already set to be an attack versus defense scenario, and after that goal, they fortified their defense. It was an uphill battle from the very beginning. It's not easy to dominate to that extent and then prevent any counter-attacks," he continued.

"We scored and had opportunities to win the game, especially with Elmas's header, which was incredible. A point here moves us up the table. We understand the importance of securing a Champions League spot. The lads gave their all, but the difference between success and a draw is so small," Conte added. "It was always going to be a mountain to climb, and we tried everything until the very end."

This result leaves Napoli six points behind league leaders Inter, though their position is dependent on the outcome of Inter's match against Como later that evening.

"The dream is not extinguished; there are still six games left for us to play. It was a dream heavily reliant on the results of those ahead of us, and considering Inter's statistics this season, it was always going to be an ambitious dream," Conte admitted. "We will continue with our current approach. We secured five consecutive wins and played well away at Parma. It's just a shame we couldn't secure those extra two points today. That early goal was a significant blow, a knockout punch that could have been decisive, but we recovered and earned this point. Now, we press on," he concluded.
