Di Lorenzo: Napoli Defended Too Deep Against Arsenal

Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo acknowledged that the team defended "a little too deep" during their match against Arsenal. Despite the frustration of three consecutive defeats, Di Lorenzo remains optimistic about Napoli's chances in the Champions League.

The home game at the Stadio Maradona was a challenging one. While Napoli anticipated Arsenal's dominance in possession, they were ultimately defeated by a well-placed strike from Martin Ødegaard. Goalkeeper Alex Meret made crucial saves before sustaining a muscular injury, a blow compounded by Alisson Santos also being sidelined. This left the squad with limited options.

The team faced further challenges with key players Kevin De Bruyne and Billy Gilmour returning for their first starts of the season, playing the full 94 minutes due to absences. Several players, including Scott McTominay, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Alessandro Buongiorno, Luca Marianucci, and Giovane, were unavailable. David Neres was only fit enough for the bench, while Noa Lang was excluded for disciplinary reasons.

Di Lorenzo Expresses Frustration After Napoli's Defeat

"We knew we were facing a great team with significant quality," Di Lorenzo told Sky Sport Italia. "We ended up defending a bit too deep, and it wasn't easy to cover all the spaces. We also had a few potential scoring opportunities where we could have been more effective with the final pass."

"The result is disappointing, but we still have seven games ahead of us to try and secure qualification for the next round."

Napoli had hoped to build on their Champions League campaign, but this loss extended their winless streak in the competition to four matches, their longest negative run since 2005 and a difficult start to the new format.

"After three defeats in a row, our confidence isn't exactly high because we want to perform well," Di Lorenzo added. "However, we must continue to work hard and follow the coach's instructions. This is just the beginning; at this level, small details can make a difference and lead to punishment. We need to eliminate these errors and start achieving positive results."
