Just as a move by Roma seemed imminent, Turkish transfer insider Yagiz Sabuncuoglu reported that Fenerbahce had submitted a new, improved bid approaching the €50 million asking price. Sabuncuoglu also claimed that two Fenerbahce representatives had traveled to France for face-to-face discussions.
In an unexpected move, Fenerbahce released an official statement this evening refuting claims that any members of their football committee were in France for transfer negotiations. The club stated, "This statement has become necessary due to the repeated dissemination of inaccurate transfer news to the public in recent days and the systematic attempt to mislead Fenerbahce fans."
Despite Fenerbahce's denial, both Sabuncuoglu and the French publication Footmercato maintain their reports, asserting that director Feridun Gecgel is indeed in France this evening to hold talks with Marseille.
