Italian Minister of Sport: Unlikely for Italy to Replace Iran at World Cup
Andrea Abodi, Italy's Minister for Sport, has stated that it's highly improbable for Italy to be considered as a replacement for Iran in the upcoming World Cup. He further added that he would not even wish for such a situation to occur.
Despite Italy's failure to qualify for their third consecutive World Cup, there have been discussions suggesting the Azzurri might be reinstated if Iran withdraws from the competition due to ongoing geopolitical conflicts involving the USA and Israel.
However, Minister Abodi has downplayed the likelihood of this scenario. He explained that such matters are typically resolved within continental confederations and it would be exceptionally rare for a situation to arise that would necessitate intervention from outside of Europe.
When questioned about the possibility of Italy being invited to participate due to developments on other continents, Abodi reiterated his stance, stating, "I don't think so, and I wouldn't even hope for it."
In the event that Iran were to withdraw, FIFA would be responsible for selecting a replacement. While Italy holds the highest FIFA ranking among the nations that did not qualify, the most probable outcome would be for another Asian team to fill Iran's spot.
