Jonathan David is currently on a career-best scoring run, a success story unfolding just six weeks after Juventus decided to move on from him.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Canadian international has now scored in four consecutive matches. His latest goal for Canada against Chile followed earlier strikes for his club against Real Sociedad, Osasuna, and Real Madrid.
This streak is a rare accomplishment for David. While he has managed three straight games with goals on multiple occasions, hitting four in a row has only happened twice before: in February 2020 with Genk, where he scored seven goals in four games, and between September and October 2022 at Lille, netting five times.
Spalletti's decision led to David's departure
The decision at Juventus was largely driven by manager Luciano Spalletti. He reportedly spent months seeking a consistent response from David but never found it. Spalletti envisioned a pure number nine, while David's style was better suited to a second striker role. Amidst growing discontent, David departed at the end of the transfer window, against his personal desire to stay and improve on a difficult first season.
Juventus highlights their gains from the move: they reduced a significant portion of the squad's salary expenditure, comparable to Kenan Yildiz's post-renewal deal, and retained Nico Gonzalez, who has shown promise since his return.
However, some supporters remain unconvinced. They worry about a repeat scenario of players like Gonzalez and Douglas Luiz, who were deemed surplus to requirements after a single season only to regain their form elsewhere.
