Vincenzo Montella saw an "incredible performance" from Turkiye in their 1-0 defeat to France. He wants to see the same "spirit" when they face Italy on Monday in the Nations League. “I am proud, it’s a shame we were unable to leave the field with a positive result,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia following Turkiye’s 1-0 loss to France. The sole goal came from Kylian Mbappé, assisted by Michael Olise. Mbappé later exited the game due to a knee injury.
“It was an incredible performance, one of our best, especially considering who we were up against. We knew that you cannot afford even half a mistake against sides like this, but I thought we had our chances too and it was a very even game,” Montella added.
Despite France holding more possession, the statistics were similar, with each team having 12 attempts on goal and making three saves.
“I saw a great team spirit, and that is something we need to carry with us into the next matches. It won’t be easy to recover physically and mentally so quickly, so we need that spirit first and foremost.
“I feel sorry for my lads, because they really did give it their all today.”
Uğurcan Çakır received a red card in the final minutes, meaning he will be suspended when Turkiye hosts Italy on Monday evening at the Atatürk Spor Kompleksi Yeten Stadium in Bursa.
