Massimo Cellino Vows Appeal as Brescia's Liquidation Redirects Tonali Solidarity Funds to FIFA
Brescia's financial collapse has resulted in a significant financial blow to Massimo Cellino, as approximately €4 million, which the club was set to receive in connection with Sandro Tonali's transfer to Tottenham, will now be allocated to a FIFA fund.
This sum originates from FIFA's solidarity contributions, triggered by Tonali's move to Roberto De Zerbi's Spurs. As one of the clubs that contributed to the midfielder's development, Brescia was entitled to a portion of the transfer fee. Cellino had even reactivated the club's dormant registration on June 30th, enrolling an Under-16 team in a provincial league, specifically to maintain Brescia's eligibility to receive these funds.
However, these strategic moves have been superseded by judicial proceedings. On July 28th, Cellino's 70th birthday, the Tribunale di Brescia officially declared the judicial liquidation of Brescia Calcio, marking the end of a 114-year legacy that included periods in both Serie A and Serie B.
This ruling followed the club's expulsion from professional leagues due to missed financial deadlines and an accumulated debt of €20 million.
Despite this setback, Cellino is determined to contest the decision. The club owner has announced his intention to appeal, asserting that the ruling is based on a misinterpretation of the facts. "I hope this decision is still reversible," he told Italpress, "because there's a big error of interpretation and a harm that must be avoided in the interest of the creditors." He indicated that a formal challenge is likely, citing what he described as a communication error in the case's handling that was never fully resolved.
