Napoli Hesitates Over Stadio Maradona Reconstruction Project

The Naples city council has put forward a project for the renovation of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with an investment of €200 million. However, the football club Napoli still desires to construct its own new arena.

This situation highlights a recurring conflict between sports clubs and local authorities regarding the future of their infrastructure. While Serie A clubs are keen on investing in and building new, purpose-built stadiums, municipal governments tend to favor upgrading existing facilities.

Napoli's Preference for a New Stadium

The Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, has presented plans for the restructuring of the Stadio Maradona, with the aim of completing the work by 2030. The proposed renovations would increase the stadium's seating capacity from the current 54,732 to 63,300. This would be achieved primarily by removing the seldom-used athletics track and replacing it with seating, bringing fans closer to the pitch.

The project also includes the addition of 16 new skyboxes for VIP and corporate guests, improved outdoor parking facilities, and the creation of green spaces for the local community. The council's investment is estimated to be around €200 million.

Edoardo Cosenza, an infrastructure assessor, explained, "We have presented this to the FIGC and UEFA as our bid to host EURO 2032. By maintaining the original structure, we can have a stadium that is completely sustainable, self-sufficient in energy and water, with a focus on accessibility. The stadium could be transformed to be enjoyed seven days a week."

A significant challenge faced in the San Siro's renovation plans was the inability to use the stadium during construction. However, in this proposal for the Stadio Maradona, Napoli would continue to play there with the expanded third tier.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has yet to officially respond to the council's proposal, as he continues to advocate for the construction of an entirely new stadium located outside the city.
