As the 2025-26 Serie A season nears its conclusion, clubs are already strategizing for the upcoming transfer window. However, reports suggest that Juventus, along with Aston Villa loanee Douglas Luiz, could be in for another complicated summer.
Douglas Luiz joined Juventus from Aston Villa for €50 million at the start of the 2024-25 season. His initial spell in Serie A was disappointing, with limited league starts in his first campaign in Italy.
After failing to impress in Turin, Douglas Luiz was loaned to Nottingham Forest with a conditional obligation to buy, a deal that could have earned Juventus €31.5 million if all bonuses were met. Ultimately, Forest did not activate the purchase clause and instead agreed to terminate his loan early, facilitating his return to Aston Villa in the January transfer window.
The loan agreement with Aston Villa included a €25 million option to buy, plus up to €3.5 million in bonuses. However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Villa has decided against triggering this option.
Despite making six consecutive Premier League starts after his return to Aston Villa in January, Douglas Luiz has not featured in the starting XI for the last five league matches or in the club’s most recent three Europa League fixtures. Since mid-March, the 27-year-old has accumulated only 80 minutes of playing time.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Juventus needs to recoup approximately €30 million from Douglas Luiz’s sale to avoid a capital loss. However, given his recent underwhelming stints with three different clubs over the past 18 months, the Italian publication suggests that Douglas Luiz will become a significant “problem” for Juventus this summer. It anticipates that finding a club willing to give him a fresh start will be a difficult task.
