NBA Owners Approve Study for Expansion to Seattle and Las Vegas
NBA executives convened for a crucial meeting in Midtown Manhattan, where all 30 franchise owners unanimously passed a pivotal motion. This approval signifies a major stride towards expanding the league to 32 teams, officially enabling the NBA to consider binding offers from prospective owners for new teams in Seattle and Las Vegas.
The expansion process appears to be progressing more rapidly than anticipated, with the potential for the two new franchises to commence play as early as the 2028-29 season. While this decision is not yet final – a subsequent vote by the owners will be required – this move is widely regarded as a near-certain indication of the league's expansion. Gaining entry into the exclusive circle of NBA owners will demand a substantial investment, with costs estimated to range between $7 billion and $10 billion for each new franchise.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented in an official statement: "Today's vote reflects the intention to explore interest in a possible expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle – two markets that boast a significant basketball history and have long supported the NBA."
