Gianluca Rocchi, the head of referees for Serie A and Serie B, has voluntarily stepped aside from his position. This decision comes after he was placed under investigation for alleged sporting fraud.
The move follows the issuance of a formal notice by prosecutors in Milan, which has ignited significant controversy within Italian football. Rocchi, who is responsible for referee appointments through the Italian Referees Association (AIA), has chosen to suspend himself while awaiting further clarification on the matter.
Reports indicate that Rocchi’s decision was made in conjunction with the referees’ association and prior to a ruling from its national committee. Addressing the situation, Rocchi conveyed his conviction that he will be cleared of any wrongdoing.
“I am certain I will emerge unscathed and stronger than before,” he stated.
This temporary withdrawal is intended to safeguard the integrity of the refereeing system during what has become a sensitive and high-profile case. His self-imposed suspension allows the relevant governing bodies to proceed with their review process without undue pressure.
The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are anticipated as it progresses.
