PING Launches G740 Iron

PING has unveiled the G740 iron, specifically designed for golfers seeking significant game improvement. This new iron promises exceptional distance and high launch, meticulously engineered to provide forgiveness and consistency that can help reduce scores.

These custom-fitted G740 irons are now available for pre-order and fittings at authorized PING retailers globally, priced at $202.50 per club with a steel shaft or $217.50 per club with a graphite shaft.

John K. Solheim, PING CEO/President, stated that the G740 iron marks a strategic re-entry into the super-game-improvement iron segment. He highlighted its visibly wider sole and larger clubhead, making it PING's most forgiving and longest iron currently available. Solheim explained that the G740 aims to provide greater consistency for its target golfers, with a larger face promoting improved ball speed and forgiveness even on off-center hits, ultimately helping players hit more greens.

A core design goal for the G740 iron was to maximize ball speed, particularly for golfers striving for more consistent contact. This optimization helps generate shots that launch higher, travel greater distances, and stop effectively on the green.

The G740 iron features a wide, dual-camber sole, which strategically positions the center of gravity (CG) low and back. This design promotes increased ball speed and a higher launch, leading to greater distance with improved stopping power. Utilizing an advanced heat-treating process, PING engineers leveraged the strength of 17-4 stainless steel to create a thinner, larger face that offers enhanced flexing. This expanded hitting surface helps maintain ball speed and accuracy even on less-than-perfect strikes. Furthermore, the PurFlex cavity badge, incorporating three distinct flex zones, effectively manages face bending while contributing to a superior feel and acoustic feedback at impact.

Solheim emphasized that the G740 iron's rapid ball speed sets it apart within its category, being crucial to its performance. He noted its high launch capabilities, which provide golfers with the necessary distance and confidence to use shorter irons into greens. The higher maximum height ensures shots land softly and stop nearer the pin. Additionally, the G740 iron delivers a satisfying feel and acoustic feedback.

A highly forgiving design is achieved through the G740's larger, perimeter-weighted head and broad sole. The cavity-back construction incorporates significant offset, aiding golfers in launching the ball more easily and consistently. The Hydropearl chrome 2.0 finish further enhances performance, ensuring consistent launch characteristics across diverse playing conditions.

The standard lofts of the G740 irons are precisely engineered to create optimal set configurations, aiming to maximize overall performance, increase distance, and fine-tune yardage gaps for each golfer. The set includes four wedges, each featuring machined faces and grooves for superior control. For further optimization, fitters can choose between "power" (stronger) and "retro" (weaker) loft specifications.
