Ryan Fox Claims Maiden Major Title at The Open Championship
Ryan Fox achieved a career-defining moment on the 72nd hole of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, sinking a nearly 12-foot birdie putt to secure his first major victory. The 39-year-old New Zealander concluded the 154th Open at 10-under par, narrowly defeating Cameron Young by a single shot in a thrilling finish to one of the season's most memorable golf events.
"I executed two shots precisely as intended," Fox stated. "I didn't feel anything for the putt; I was shaking so much. I was just relieved to get it near the hole, and seeing it drop was absolutely incredible."
This triumph marks Fox's most significant career achievement, positioning him alongside Sir Bob Charles (1963) as the only New Zealanders to ever win the prestigious Claret Jug.
The final round saw its share of drama. Sam Burns began the day in the lead, while Tommy Fleetwood and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler mounted early challenges. Cameron Young, who had a challenging third round, bounced back with a spectacular 6-under-par 64 on Sunday, setting the clubhouse target at 9-under and putting immediate pressure on the leading players.
"I had a chance to win despite not playing my absolute best," Young reflected. "I think that's a positive takeaway."
Young, a multiple winner on the PGA TOUR this season, finished solo second, continuing a pattern of strong performances in majors. This result is likely to bolster his candidacy for the PGA TOUR Player of the Year award.
However, the day ultimately belonged to Fox. Demonstrating remarkable resilience and precision, he surged with four birdies in his final six holes. Even a couple of difficult bunker lies couldn't deter him. On the challenging 18th, Fox hit a commanding drive, followed by an exquisite approach shot to within 11 feet, 7 inches, setting the stage for the putt that would define his career.
"To finish with a putt—everyone practices on the green, imagining a putt to win a major, to win The Open," Fox shared. "In reality, it's not like that. It's not a comfortable feeling at all. It's certainly incredibly rewarding when you see it go in."
Fox's victory has significant implications for his career and the golf world. Previously outside the top ranks of the Official World Golf Ranking, he is expected to see a substantial climb, instantly elevating his international standing. The win also provides a crucial boost in the PGA TOUR season. With the FedExCup playoffs approaching, Fox jumped 38 places to No. 21 in the standings, virtually securing his spot in the TOUR Championship. This success offers him valuable momentum and strategic flexibility as the postseason begins.
For players like Burns, Fleetwood, and Scheffler, strong finishes still mean important FedExCup points, though they may view this major as a missed opportunity.
On a blustery afternoon at Royal Birkdale, under immense pressure, Fox delivered when it mattered most—a composed drive, a precise approach, and a fearless putt that etched his name into golf history.
"Looking at this trophy now, it's the first time I've seen it up close, so this is a dream come true," Fox added.
With this single stroke, Fox not only won The Open but also dramatically altered the trajectory of his career. He becomes the third New Zealander to win a men's major championship, following Michael Campbell, who won the U.S. Open 21 years ago.
This is Fox's third PGA TOUR victory, adding to his wins at the RBC Canadian Open and the OneFlight Myrtle Beach Classic last year.
