Jonathan David, the Juventus striker, has etched his name in Canadian football history by achieving the nation’s first-ever World Cup hat-trick. This remarkable feat occurred during Canada’s resounding 6-0 victory over Qatar in their second group stage match of the 2026 World Cup. However, the celebratory mood was dampened by a severe injury sustained by Sassuolo midfielder Ismael Koné.
David Secures Historic Hat-Trick in Canada’s Dominant Win
Juventus forward Jonathan David was the undisputed star of the match, netting three goals to become the first Canadian player to achieve a hat-trick on the World Cup stage. His individual brilliance contributed significantly to Canada’s convincing 6-0 triumph over Qatar.
Despite the jubilant atmosphere, there was a somber moment for the Canadian team. Midfielder Ismael Koné suffered a broken leg approximately eight minutes into the second half, with Canada already holding a comfortable 3-0 lead.
The injury resulted from a reckless challenge by Qatar’s Assim Madibo. Initially, Madibo received a yellow card, but a VAR review led to the decision being upgraded to a red card, sending him off.
“Ismael is such a great kid – he’s so imperfect, but that’s part of why you love him,” Canada’s coach Jesse Marsch commented, as reported by The Sun. “Because he can do great things that nobody else can do, then the next moment he loses concentration. He embodies us as a team, it’s a huge loss for us. He’ll be fine; we’ll get him good doctors and get him back, but that kid is a big part of our future and everything we do.”
Both Koné and David have recently concluded their inaugural seasons in Serie A. David scored eight goals in 46 appearances for Juventus across all competitions, while Koné found the net six times in 36 matches for Sassuolo.
David now leads the World Cup scoring charts. Despite this, recent reports from Italy suggest that Juventus might be open to offers for the Canadian international this summer. However, according to Gazzetta, David is keen to stay at Juventus and compete for a starting position in the 2026-27 season.
