While Italy will not participate in the upcoming World Cup, a significant number of Serie A players are set to feature in the tournament. For many, this global stage presents an opportunity for redemption after a challenging club season.
The World Cup, much like the unpredictability of slot jackpots, can dramatically alter fortunes in an instant on football’s grandest platform. A fortunate bounce or a perfectly executed strike can change everything.
Players who may not have impressed at the club level could end up playing pivotal roles for their national teams, scoring crucial goals or making game-saving interventions that will be etched in the memories of football fans for years to come.
A total of sixty-six Serie A players are expected to compete in the 2026 World Cup. Genoa’s centre-back, Leo Ostigard, has already made history by becoming the first player from Italy’s top flight to score in the current tournament.
Ostigard enjoyed a solid season with Genoa, contributing to the team’s successful survival in Serie A under the guidance of Italian legend Daniele De Rossi. However, some of his Serie A counterparts are hoping the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico will mark a turning point and offer them a fresh start.
Among these players is Napoli’s striker, Romelu Lukaku, who has had limited game time for Napoli in the 2026-27 season, accumulating only 64 minutes on the field. The Belgian international was hampered by a significant pre-season injury and later faced a dispute with the club in March, when he chose to remain in Belgium for individual training during an international break, rather than returning.
Napoli initially imposed a fine on Lukaku but later permitted him to continue his preparations after the World Cup hiatus.
Lukaku played a crucial part in Belgium’s 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening 2026 World Cup match earlier this week. His presence on the field contributed to an own goal by the Egyptian team, just 30 minutes after he was substituted in.
“Even though it was recorded as an own goal, Romelu’s presence was vital. We know how dangerous he can be for the opponent’s defense,” commented his teammate, Kevin De Bruyne. He added, “Looking at the other matches in this World Cup, nothing can be taken for granted, and no game is easy.”
Rudi Garcia, a former Napoli coach, also shared his thoughts: “Lukaku could have even scored a brace with that header, but I am delighted for him, and the entire squad feels the same. Lukaku is immensely important to us.”
Other Serie A stars looking to make a mark and find redemption at the World Cup include Milan’s wingers, Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic.
Pulisic has yet to score for his club this year in 2026. Meanwhile, Leao has openly expressed that he feels his time at Milan is coming to an end and that he will be seeking a new challenge after the World Cup concludes.
