Turkiye’s coach, Vincenzo Montella, has conveyed his appreciation to Inter Milan for allowing Hakan Calhanoglu to join the national team early for World Cup preparations. However, Montella also voiced apprehension regarding the fitness of Juventus talent, Kenan Yildiz.
The Italian manager was present at the Europa League Final in Istanbul. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Montella discussed Turkiye’s readiness for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Montella’s World Cup Strategy for Turkiye
“The World Cup is a compact tournament, so performance at the moment of arrival is key,” Montella stated. “Unexpected events can be decisive, impacting both underdogs and favorites. Our primary goal is to advance from the group stage, but we understand the unpredictability of knockout matches.”
“There’s considerable enthusiasm and confidence within the squad, but we must maintain focus and avoid overconfidence.”
Kenan Yildiz, considered the most promising young player in the squad, has faced fitness challenges despite performing well for Juventus, even after taking on the iconic number 10 jersey. He has been dealing with recurring inflammation, which has hindered his consistent training.
“Yildiz, at 21 years old, is embarking on what we hope will be the first of many World Cup journeys,” Montella commented. “He’s experienced some knee issues in recent months, preventing him from training at full capacity. We are somewhat concerned about his condition, but his enthusiasm remains undiminished.”
Inter midfielder Calhanoglu also had recent injury concerns. With his club having already secured the Scudetto and Coppa Italia, they have granted him an early release to join the national team.
“I learned that he arrived in Istanbul today, and I’m thankful to Inter and the player for enabling us to work with him starting Friday. I hope he can regain his optimal form for the World Cup.”
“Calhanoglu is one of our most vital players, arguably the most important.”
Inter has decided to give all players participating in the World Cup an extended break, meaning they will not feature in the final league match of the season.
