Atalanta Secures Decisive 3-0 Win Against Lecce, Eyes Top Four
Atalanta delivered a commanding performance, securing a decisive 3-0 victory against Lecce. This win propels La Dea closer to a coveted top-four spot in Serie A, reducing the gap to just five points, while simultaneously pushing Lecce further into the clutches of relegation concern. Goals came from Giorgio Scalvini, Nikola Krstovic, and Giacomo Raspadori.
Traveling without key players Isak Hien and Gianluca Scamacca, Atalanta saw Nikola Krstovic go up against his former club. Lecce, or "The Salentini," entered the match in precarious form, having lost four of their last five outings. Their squad was also hampered by the absence of Antonino Gallo, Riccardo Sottil, Francesco Camarda, Medon Berisha, and Kialonda Gaspar.
The atmosphere at kick-off was notably divided. Lecce's ultras demonstrated their protest against recent limitations by leaving the Curva Nord empty for the initial 15 minutes. In a contrasting heartwarming gesture, the players brought out puppies from a local rescue center as mascots.
The first significant chance fell to Lecce in the 11th minute, but Sadik Fofana failed to capitalize, shanking a half-volley well over the bar from 14 yards, despite being relatively unchallenged. At the other end, Atalanta's Charles De Ketelaere was denied by a superb one-handed save from Wladimiro Falcone following a Krstovic lay-off.
Lameck Banda's effort for Lecce was blocked, but Atalanta soon broke the deadlock. On a swift counter-attack, Giorgio Scalvini embarked on a run from his own penalty area, collecting a pass from De Ketelaere. He then expertly shrugged off a defender before unleashing a powerful shot into the net from 12 yards.
Atalanta nearly doubled their lead when De Ketelaere teed up Krstovic for a first-time strike, which again forced a sensational save from Falcone. From the subsequent corner, Danilo Veiga bravely blocked Ederson’s fierce shot with his face.
Early in the second half, Atalanta thought they had scored again when Ederson tapped in a De Ketelaere pass at the back post, but a very close offside call disallowed the goal.
Lecce struggled to convert promising opportunities, often resorting to rushed crosses from Walid Cheddira and Lameck Banda. Their inefficiency was punished by Atalanta's second goal, another clinical counter-attack. Ederson initiated the move, and De Ketelaere provided a precise through ball for Nikola Krstovic, who clinically finished from 12 yards. The former Lecce striker showed respect to his old fans by bowing in apology instead of celebrating.
Falcone continued to impress with another strong save, this time denying Ederson from close range. However, Atalanta's relentless attack persisted, and the goalkeeper was powerless when Giacomo Raspadori connected with the ball, rifling it into the top of the net from 12 yards to make it 3-0.
Lameck Banda remained Lecce's most determined player, curling an effort just over the bar. Towards the end, Krstovic attempted an acrobatic overhead kick from a Raspadori assist, but his shot went wide.
