Baldini Commends U21 Talents Promoted to Italy's Senior Squad
Italy Under-21 national team coach Silvio Baldini is preparing his squad for upcoming qualifying matches against North Macedonia and Sweden. He expressed immense satisfaction regarding the promotion of promising players Marco Palestra and Niccolò Pisilli to the senior national team, labeling it a significant "success" for the U21 program.
After a four-month break, the Azzurrini are set to resume their qualification campaign for the 2027 European Under-21 Championship. Their schedule includes a home game against North Macedonia at the Stadio Castellani in Empoli on Thursday, followed by an away fixture against Sweden at the Boras Arena on Tuesday, March 31.
Notably absent from the U21 training camp are Cagliari full-back Palestra and Roma midfielder Pisilli. Both talents have received call-ups from senior team coach Gennaro Gattuso to participate in the crucial World Cup play-offs.
Baldini's Confidence in Italy's Future
Speaking at a press conference, Coach Baldini stated, "Their promotion to the senior squad is a success for us because it signifies our contribution to their developmental journey. Few would have anticipated in September 2025 that these two players would be prepared for such important play-off matches. This achievement fills us with pride and confirms that we are pursuing the correct path."
The senior Italy team is slated to play Northern Ireland in a semi-final match on Thursday. Should they emerge victorious, they will then face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 31, with a coveted spot in the World Cup at stake.
Baldini shared his recent conversations with Gattuso and legendary goalkeeper Gigi Buffon. "I've spoken with Gattuso and Gigi Buffon in recent days; they are seasoned professionals accustomed to the pressures of major tournaments. They understand the immense responsibility resting on their shoulders, but they have our full support. I believe there's no better leadership to guide us to qualification," Baldini commented, adding, "I am absolutely convinced that Italy will secure a place in the World Cup."
Meanwhile, the Under-21 squad has welcomed new additions, including Honest Ahanor from Atalanta and Lazio's new goalkeeper Edoardo Motta, who recently made headlines by saving a penalty in only his third Serie A appearance.
Baldini also highlighted the progress of other young talents: "Players like Lipani, Bartesaghi, and Venturino have gained valuable minutes in Serie A, demonstrating their capability to perform at the highest level of football. We possess a strong group and must maintain our positive momentum. Our primary objective remains fostering as many players as possible for promotion to the senior Italy squad."
