Conte Fined, Avoids Suspension After Heated Referee Confrontation
Antonio Conte has received a monetary penalty but successfully dodged any form of suspension, following his contentious remarks directed at referee Gianluca Manganiello after Napoli's Coppa Italia elimination by Como in February.
Napoli's Coppa Italia journey concluded last month with a 1-1 quarter-final draw against Como, which ultimately led to a penalty shootout defeat. During this intense match, Conte reportedly lost his composure, confronting fourth official Giovanni Ayroldi over what he perceived as a series of incorrect decisions made by referee Manganiello.
The Partenopei head coach's frustration was particularly ignited by a foul on Rasmus Hojlund committed by Como centre-back Jacobo Ramon, an incident Conte believed warranted a VAR check at the very least. Ramon made a similar challenge again towards the end of the first half, yet he controversially escaped a booking.
Conte was caught on camera verbally abusing referee Manganiello, referring to him with a derogatory term during a heated exchange with fourth official Ayroldi. He also accused the official of deliberately making biased decisions against him, stating that the official "does it on purpose with me."
The coach’s inflammatory comments led to an investigation initiated by FIGC prosecutor Giuseppe Chinè. According to article 36 of the sporting code of justice, Conte faced the risk of a minimum four-match suspension as a consequence of the 'abuse' he directed at the officials.
Reports from Corriere dello Sport indicate that Conte underwent a private interrogation with the prosecutor’s office just a few days after the Napoli vs. Como match took place.
Given Conte’s cooperation throughout the investigation, his legal representative was able to reach an agreement with the authorities. This resolution sees him handed a €6,000 fine rather than any matchday suspensions, allowing him to continue his duties without interruption.
