Alessandro Del Piero has reminisced about Italy's 2006 World Cup triumph, the Azzurri's most recent victory on the global stage. He shared his thoughts on the joy of that summer and the surrounding turbulence. Speaking to Sky Sport on the 20th anniversary of their success, the former Juventus forward described the campaign as an emotional rollercoaster.

"That goal against Germany had a special significance; it was everyone's World Cup," Del Piero stated, with quotes reported by TuttoMercatoWeb. "For those who experienced it, dreamed it, and desired it, there's always immense emotion. Now that I'm retired, celebrating trophies is much easier, especially this one. We've kept the spirit of that World Cup squad alive."

His reflections also carried a realistic perspective on the current state of Italian football. "Watching these World Cups, you realize that some national teams have made significant progress, and qualifying is no longer a certainty," he added, a subtle nod to Italy's recent three consecutive tournament misses.

Del Piero recalls staying 'isolated' from Juventus turmoil

The backdrop to Italy's 2006 victory was far from simple. The Calciopoli scandal was shaking Italian football that summer, with Juventus, Del Piero's club and home to many of his teammates, at its epicenter. The club was ultimately stripped of titles and relegated to Serie B.

"What was happening in the Juventus world was hard to comprehend, even for us involved," Del Piero recalled. "At that time, staying focused was paramount. Within the squad, we had a strong bond and were all concentrated on our goal, determined not to let external news disrupt our peace. There was immense tension, and the World Cup felt overwhelming at times due to everything going on. However, we were very good at shielding ourselves from it."

This capacity for compartmentalization, as Del Piero describes it, was key to one of the most remarkable achievements in Italian football history. This accomplishment now feels even more distant in light of the Azzurri's current challenges.
