Speaking from Coverciano, Italian international Federico Dimarco emphasized that 'mental strength' would be the paramount quality required by the Azzurri in their upcoming World Cup play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dimarco addressed journalists at Coverciano on Saturday, just three days before the crucial qualification match.

Dimarco's Insights on Italy's World Cup Play-off Challenge

The Inter Milan defender stated, "We anticipate an intense atmosphere and a determined opponent equally eager to secure World Cup qualification."

He added, "A multifaceted approach is essential. Italy has been absent from the World Cup for an extended period, and we are absolutely committed to earning our rightful place."

"This squad enjoys playing together. We have to seize this opportunity and demonstrate unwavering mental resilience. We are aware of the challenging environment, but I am confident that if we maintain focus for the entire 95 minutes, victory will be ours."

When questioned about the most crucial attribute the Azzurri would need to display in Zenica on Tuesday, Dimarco reiterated: "Mental fortitude. Even after a somewhat strained first half and Retegui's missed chance, we refused to become disheartened."

"Some might have started to doubt, but we persevered, scoring the opening goal and then sealing the win with Moise. Our concentration remained absolute for the entire match."

He continued, emphasizing, "Ultimately, the mind dictates the body; we recognize we are up against a formidable side."

"Their team features several players from our domestic league, so we must perform excellently across all aspects of the game. They will launch aggressive attacks, and we must respond decisively."

During the conference, Dimarco also clarified his reaction to Bosnia's victory over Wales on Thursday, expressing his view that broadcasting it live on television was disrespectful.

He further confirmed reaching out to his former Inter teammate and Bosnia captain, Edin Dzeko, via text message after the video gained widespread attention.

Dimarco described Dzeko as "a genuinely great person; you always needed to provide him with assists to see him happy."

He added, "I also caught up with him on holiday last summer and know him very well."

This season, Dimarco has been instrumental for Inter, contributing to 22 goals in 38 appearances. His Nerazzurri teammate, Francesco Pio Esposito, is reportedly a strong candidate to start against Bosnia next week.

Dimarco concluded, "I am having a good season, but as I’ve always maintained, individual achievements hold little weight. The collective results are what truly matter; otherwise, statistics are without meaning."

Regarding Esposito, Dimarco stated, "Pio is part of this squad purely on merit; however, the coach will make the final decision on his playing time."

"He is an exceptionally special young man because, despite his age, he possesses remarkable mental maturity. It's genuinely difficult to be upset with him as he consistently gives 100% in both matches and training. This dedication accounts for his significant development over the past six or seven months. There’s little need to offer him advice, as adding more pressure would be counterproductive."

The 28-year-old Dimarco has registered three goals in 37 appearances for the Italy national team since his senior debut in June 2022.
