Freuler: 'I Know Gasperini's Game by Heart' After 254 Games Together
Remo Freuler, potentially Bologna's key asset, expresses deep familiarity with Gian Piero Gasperini's tactical approach ahead of their Europa League clash with Roma.
The initial match of this Round of 16 encounter is scheduled for Thursday at the Stadio Dall’Ara at 17.45 GMT (18.45 CET).
Given this is an all-Italian UEFA derby, major surprises between the two sides are unlikely, though individuals like Freuler possess even greater insight into the opposing coach.
A Familiar Rivalry: Gasperini and Freuler
Freuler played 254 matches under Gasperini during their time together at Atalanta from 2016 to 2022, contributing 20 goals and 23 assists.
“I'm intimately familiar with Gasperini's playing style, despite some evolutions in his approach in recent years,” Freuler stated to Sky Sport Italia.
“The core principles remain largely consistent, and I look forward to reuniting with him tomorrow.”
Gasperini often finalizes his lineup decisions late, and currently employs two trequartistas to support a central striker, partly due to numerous attacking injuries.
“I'm also aware of his tactical adjustments, whether he opts for a three-man attack or an additional midfielder; I understand his strategic thinking. We'll observe how it unfolds,” Freuler added.
After departing Atalanta for Nottingham Forest in 2022, Freuler quickly returned to Serie A, finding renewed form and enthusiasm with Bologna.
Although he left before Atalanta secured the Europa League trophy, he did share in prior European successes with the club.
“I recall our celebrations after the Shakhtar Donetsk match, when we advanced to the Champions League Round of 16. That joy, along with our excellent camaraderie both on and off the pitch, remains vivid,” recounted the Swiss international.
“A positive result in the first leg is crucial for approaching the return fixture with confidence. Our aim is to continue our Europa League journey.”
“Regrettably, we drew Roma, who, with all due respect to other potential opponents, present a tougher challenge than KRC Genk.”
