Gattuso Explains Bergamo Choice Over San Siro for Italy's World Cup Play-off

Italy national team coach Gennaro Gattuso has personally selected Bergamo's New Balance Arena as the venue for the upcoming World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland. He expressed gratitude to FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and Delegation Chief Gigi Buffon for granting him the autonomy to make this crucial decision. The decisive match is scheduled for Thursday, March 26.

Gattuso clarified his reasoning for choosing the 25,000-seat stadium in Bergamo over the much larger San Siro. He believes that a smaller, more intimate venue will cultivate a more intense and supportive atmosphere for the national team. He recalled instances at 60,000-seat stadiums like San Siro, where fans, often divided by club loyalties (Inter and Milan), tend to quickly voice their disapproval with boos after even a few misplaced passes, which can be detrimental to team morale.

The coach highlighted that Bergamo, which also hosted his debut as Italy's coach against Estonia last September, provides an environment conducive to creating a "real cauldron-like atmosphere." He emphasized that the team's entire focus is now on this pivotal Thursday's game, viewing it as a significant opportunity for success.
