Genoa Secure Mario Mitaj from Al-Ittihad in Deal Valued Up to €6.5 Million
Genoa has officially completed the signing of Albanian international defender Mario Mitaj from Al-Ittihad. The agreement, which includes an option to purchase, is reportedly valued at a total of €6.5 million.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Genoa will initially pay €2 million to Al-Ittihad for a one-season loan. They then hold the option to make the transfer permanent in June 2026 for an additional €4.5 million.
This represents a significant investment for the left-back, who is set to celebrate his 23rd birthday next week.
Mitaj Eager for Genoa Experience
“Joining a club like Genoa and playing in Serie A was a personal goal for me,” Mitaj stated on the club's official website. “I am highly motivated to demonstrate my capabilities.”
He will be wearing the number 2 jersey for Genoa this season.
While Roma from within Serie A and a potential return to his former club AEK Athens in Greece had also shown interest, Genoa ultimately succeeded in securing his signature.
Mitaj arrived in Genoa earlier today and successfully completed his medical examinations this afternoon. He finalized the contract details this evening.
Despite his young age, he has already earned 32 senior caps for Albania. He joined Al-Ittihad in 2024 from Lokomotiv Moscow.
“Mario possesses two crucial qualities: the technical ability to build play from the back, and the mental fortitude required to represent Genoa,” commented Chief of Football Diego Lopez on the club's website.
