Juventus has been fined €10,000 by the Lega Serie A. The club failed to ensure supporters respected a minute’s silence dedicated to the late Inter and Italy legend Sandro Mazzola. The tribute took place over the weekend.
Mazzola, considered one of Italy's greatest footballers, passed away at 83 on Saturday. A minute’s silence was observed at all Serie A matches following the news.
However, the tribute was not respectfully held at the Allianz Stadium before the Juventus vs. Atalanta match. Some supporters in the Curva Sud turned their backs to the pitch and sang chants for club legends during the designated minute. These actions drew widespread criticism from the football community and led to public condemnation from the club itself in a statement released shortly after the game.
The Lega Serie A confirmed the €10,000 fine on Tuesday. The league noted that the penalty was reduced because the club swiftly criticized the supporters involved and because the rest of the stadium's applause for Mazzola managed to drown out the disruptive chants.
