Michael Kayode Discusses Italy Call-Up and Nigeria's Interest

Michael Kayode learned of his maiden senior Italy call-up immediately after Brentford's 3-0 victory over Chelsea. He confirmed Nigeria had approached him, but he never considered switching allegiance from England.

Kayode is one of ten potential debutants named by Roberto Mancini for upcoming Nations League fixtures against Belgium, France, and Turkey. The Azzurri will face these opponents both home and away during the international break.

“I found out about the Italy call-up right after the match against Chelsea, on my phone. It was an incredible feeling, especially after such a significant win,” Kayode stated at a press conference. He expressed admiration for Paolo Maldini, highlighting him as a key inspiration for his defensive capabilities.

Having previously starred for Italy at the youth level, including scoring the winning goal in the Euro U19 Final against Portugal, Kayode's decision to represent Italy was straightforward. "Nigeria approached me, but I never thought about changing national teams," he said. "I think Italy have always been a great national team, and playing here is an honor."

The Brentford defender joined the English club from Fiorentina in January 2025 on loan, with the move made permanent for €17.5 million later that season. Kayode acknowledged the ambition to play in the Premier League as a driving factor in his transfer.

Reflecting on his time at Fiorentina, Kayode expressed gratitude for his development there, calling it a formative experience. He also noted the unique nature of his long throw-ins, a skill he has honed at Brentford with dedicated coaching.

Kayode's career path has included a stint in Serie D with Gozzano after leaving the Juventus academy. He views this experience as crucial for building resilience and fighting for his place at higher levels. He also credits his family for their unwavering support.

A father at 22, Kayode sees his family as a source of strength. He recounted the story behind his goal announcement, a collaboration with Brentford.

Despite past reports linking him with Juventus, Kayode is content with his current path at Brentford and had already agreed to a contract extension. He maintains no regrets about his past decisions, including leaving Juventus, believing it paved the way for his current success.

He has reunited with Alberto Bollini, Mancini's assistant coach and his former manager at Italy U19. Kayode highlighted his conversations with Giovanni Di Lorenzo as influential, particularly regarding tactical aspects of the game. He described Mancini's direct approach to tactical instructions during training as significant for his understanding.

Kayode acknowledged the disappointment of missing the World Cup but views the current situation as an opportunity for a new beginning with the national team. He contrasted the tactical focus of Serie A with the faster, transition-oriented nature of the Premier League, finding both leagues beneficial for his growth.

Addressing the multicultural makeup of the current Italian squad, Kayode believes Italy is well-prepared for this modern reality. He also shared messages from former Fiorentina teammates, mentioning Favasuli, and spoke of meeting Italian players based in London, such as Bove, Calafiori, and Tonali.
