Minister for Sport sees no issues in Italy’s Bosnia celebration: ‘Move on’
Italy's Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, has downplayed the controversy surrounding the Azzurri's celebration of Bosnia's victory over Wales, stating that the incident has been overemphasized and that he sees "nothing provocative" in their actions.
A video clip circulating on Thursday night showed a group of Italian players briefly reacting to Bosnia and Herzegovina's penalty shootout triumph against Wales in the World Cup play-off semifinal. This win secured Bosnia a spot in the final against Italy, as the Azzurri had earlier defeated Northern Ireland 2-0 in Bergamo.
The celebration garnered some criticism from fans on social media. It was even reported that Federico Dimarco, one of the players involved, reportedly messaged his former Inter teammate and Bosnia captain, Edin Dzeko, regarding the incident.
Sport Minister: Italy's Celebration Not 'Excessive Enthusiasm'
However, Minister Abodi defended the Italian squad, asserting that their intent was not to mock or challenge their upcoming opponents.
"I didn't perceive any excessive enthusiasm," Abodi told a sports publication. "I'm unsure what was on their minds at that specific moment. The significance attributed to that celebration is something I don't grasp. We're discussing young men who had just concluded a match, and there appears to be no element of provocation. Let’s endeavor to progress past this. We already contend with numerous objectively complex situations, making this particular dispute entirely baseless."
The Italian team has since returned to Florence to continue their preparations for the World Cup play-off Final, which is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica.
