Napoli Expresses Anger Over Lukaku's Unauthorized Stay in Belgium
Reports from various Italian sources indicate that Napoli is displeased and contemplating disciplinary measures against Romelu Lukaku. The striker has reportedly chosen to continue his training and recovery in Belgium until next week, a decision made without the club's explicit consent.
Lukaku's Unapproved Absence Causes Frustration
The Belgian international did not report back to Naples as expected this morning to resume training. According to several Italian media outlets, including Sky, Il Mattino, and Repubblica, Lukaku was scheduled to rejoin the club's training facilities. This follows his alleged communication to Belgium national team coach Rudi Garcia that he was unfit for upcoming international friendlies against Mexico and the USMNT, citing a need for more recovery time.
Sky Sports further reports that Lukaku intends to remain in Belgium until the following week. His scheduled return this morning was to train under Antonio Conte's assistant, Cristian Stellini, as Conte himself is currently on a short break and expected back in Naples soon.
However, Lukaku has opted to stay in Antwerp, where he is focusing on his recovery at the same clinic recently utilized by his national teammate, Kevin De Bruyne.
The 32-year-old forward sustained a significant muscle injury during pre-season in August. This season, he has only managed to play 64 minutes across seven appearances, scoring just one goal.
Repubblica suggests that Napoli may impose disciplinary sanctions on their striker for his decision to remain in Belgium without securing the club's authorization.
